Lamar County Genealogical Society Newsletter February 2000 1998 ANNUAL WINS FIRST PLACE AWARD!!!!!!! The 1998 Annual for our society was entered in the Texas State Genealogical Society's Writing Contest and won first place this year. We are very grateful to Pam Underwood who did the indexing, Betsy Mills and Mary Lane for their editing and arranging and all members who submitted stories. The purpose of TSGS is to promote, assist, develop, and conserve the genealogical and historical resources of Texas and to cooperate with local, regional and state-wide groups in promoting an awareness of the need to preserve family heritage. Specifically, the mission of TSGS is as follows: Research, record, accumulate reproduce, distributes and circulate genealogical and historical material. Assist in making such material available to those who are, or may be encouraged to be, in family and Texas history. Perpetuate the memory of Texans and their ancestors and inspire a wholesome regard for those who have been and are now part of the heritage of our state and nation. Stress the importance of accuracy through the careful documentation of research. Make donations by acquisition or memorial to research collections which are open to the public. Disseminate knowledge by sponsoring conferences, workshops, and seminars. Publish a quarterly journal titled STIRPES, newsletters, and other publications useful to researchers. Sponsor awards for writing and honors recognizing the efforts of individuals and organizations. Texas State Genealogical Society website is at URL We hope you have received the 1999 Annual by now. Please send in your submissions to the 2000 Annual so we may get an early start on this project. Pictures submitted must be actual photographs. Please do not send us the new color technology photocopies. These sometimes do not reproduce well on the machine that does our Annual. Here are some basic guidelines: 1. Send information in block paragraphs in a story form. Please do not send family group sheets. 2. Please do not use special formatting, double spacing, bold or capitalized surnames. If possible, save the text in WordPerfect 5.x format. 3. Send two black and white photographs, no larger than 3X5 size. One copy will remain pasted to the printers copy of the Annual forever. The other will go into a file that will be kept at the library. 4. Send the information on disk to the library and make sure to indicate it is for the Annual. Or you may send an attached file to Ron Brothers 5. Please limit submissions to no more than 20 pages per subject. Remember, the success of the Annual depends on the submissions of our members!!! LAMAR COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY VOLUNTEER PROJECT PROGRAM The purpose of this program is first, to involve as many members of the society as possible to share in the preservation of historical materials within the collections and holdings of the society and second to provide a more efficient, systematic and orderly manner in which to store, house and retrieve materials of the society for public use. Members are encouraged to accept one of the announcements that most suits the time they may have available to devote to the necessary project. Members are also encouraged to suggest other projects that may need to be accomplished for the preservation of any historical materials that may concern Lamar County and the surrounding area. Completion of any project will place the volunteer on the permanent Honor Roll of The Society so that they may be recognized for all time in the annuls of the history of Lamar County. At this point no date has been announced for any of the various phases of bidding and construction of the project. In the meantime the Historical Society continues to develop plans for its museum. Dr. William Hayden has completed construction of his Conference Center across from the Depot. This marks the completion of the first phase of this vast historical complex, and we will hold our monthly meeting there on February 17, 2000 at 6:30 p.m. when Dr. Hayden will give the program and give us a tour the facility. In the meantime an application for grant money has been made to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to develop the grounds surrounding the Depot. The following is a tentative plan for this development. HERITAGE PARK Paris, Texas GOAL: To create a public park in keeping with the presence of the current restoration of the Union Station (c. 1910). The park will have a heritage theme. The park will complement the restoration in progress of the Union Station, a one million dollar project. It will be expected to revitalize an otherwise neglected area of the downtown historic district. The park will have a decided interest to older citizens by virtue of the garden aspect rather than emphasis on athletic fields, swimming pools, and extensive play grounds, etc. RESOURCES: There is available approximately five plus acres of land not including the depot itself. A major section of this land has been donated for a match to funds sought grantwise for development of the park. This land has been professionally appraised at a value of $ 62500. The City of Paris has provided for $ 50000 in its budget to also be used for matching funds for a total of $ 112500. Not included in this match is a 7500 square foot building which has been donated to the city and designated as the site for the Lamar County Historical Museum to be operated by the Lamar County Historical Society. The area is within the designated Historic District of Paris, Texas. PRESENT STATE AND CONDITION OF THE LAND AVAILABLE: The land for the most part has been graded and is flat, with a scooped out area in the center where there is water drainage from the north. This area drains more than 700 feet to a low area on the distal end which centrally accumulates some water and in which there are numerous trees and bushes growing (see diagram). Since this land was originally a railroad bed and roundhouse site, the area is strewn with rocks and remains of an earlier railroad presence. General drainage is satisfactory to the South where the water ultimately crosses West Austin Street through culverts. A portion of the area at the north has been prepared as a parking lot to accommodate the depot and the Chamber of Commerce and Genealogical Society, both of which will occupy the restored depot building. A portion of this lot has already been developed at private expense. Existing utility poles on the north Kaufman Street boundary will be removed by TXU and the facilities placed underground assuring the park and depot of an unobstructed view. One hundred and twenty pine trees have been donated and planted on the perimeter of the park and creating an esplanade that will be a part of the walking track. BASIC COMPONENTS OF THE PARK: The park will include a one half mile walking track, the track itself being either crushed stone or Apple-Base, and it will be bordered by liriope throughout its length. At 100 foot intervals there will be small signs at waist high level with a forest green background with white letters, each noting an event in the history of Lamar County. These will be two sided so a reverse trip will assure that at least 30 historical facts will be covered. These signs will be metal and will be weather proof and fixed in concrete. The track will meander through a Crepe Myrtle garden (Paris is The Crepe Myrtle City) on the north edge, circle around a fountain, and the historical radio pole, and will skirt a pavilion and the Pioneer Wall and make its way South to double back and then cross the wooded watery area on a bridge to reach the west side and will then turn north and make its way through a tree lined esplanade to the edge of the depot and by a moderate sized playground. The fountain will be at zero depth to allow children to play in the spray in the summer. Between the trees in the Esplanade areas will be a series of picnic tables. The Crepe Myrtle Garden project has been accepted by the Paris Council of Garden Clubs. The fountain will be in the center of a 50 foot circular pool and will recirculate the water. The fountain will be at zero depth to allow children to play in the spray in the summer. A single spray will reach 35-50 feet. Also moved into the park will be the original radio pole constructed for the train traffic control in the 1930's. This will be relocated from the edge of the depot where it is endangered at this time. A pavilion with a central barbecue and cooking area and chimney, seating 75-100 people will be constructed in such a manner as to coordinate with the design of the depot. It will be located across from the area previously donated which will be the living history area of the Museum (outside exhibits and buildings). The western edge of the land is on a plateau which is approximately 8-10 feet above the level of the eastern section and this will lend itself very well to construction of a small amphitheater sloping down and with the intervening stream separating the stage from the seating. The western most section of the plateau will be designated as an 'arboretum area" with various native trees being planted in the space. The visual depth of the park will be maintained by keeping the center section at low profile. Just west of the Pavilion will be an area designated as the Pioneer Wall. This wall will be granite, 10 feet long to begin, and will be an area where pioneer families can have the surname of the family etched along with the date of their arrival in Lamar County. This area will be landscaped to make it into a garden between the walking path and the Pavilion. As time proceeds, additions to the wall can be made. EXPECTED USAGE: Year round walking tract and event areas with emphasis on the spring and summer months and the fall foliage of the arboretum. Numerous events will be scheduled in the park and coordinated through the Chamber of Commerce which will be housed in the depot along with the Visitor Center. SUB-PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS: Grading and infrastructure: Removal of rocks, covering the upper reaches of the water drainage with culverts to allow for the parking lot. Installation of underground water access for sprinkling system for the parks and the gardens. Walking path: Will require smoothing and cleaning and laying down of a chosen base. Walking path signage: Anthony Signs has agreed to produce the signs and locate them for $70 apiece. Bridge: Steel bridge with concrete abutments, spanning approximately 50 feet across the wooded watery area. (There is the possibility that a historic bridge located in the city may removed and used in this instance). Fountain and pool: Infrastructure will be needed for piping. Water will be recycled but spillage will pour down the stream. This piping system will also include the water supply for the Crepe Myrtle Gardens. Amphitheater: Seating for 100 of concrete with graded lawn space for additional casual seating. Concrete stage of 20 X 30 feet wired for light and sound. Pavilion: Cost estimate from Richard Hunt, Contractor, is $ 15000. Pioneer Monument: The monument area would start with a 10 foot wall, 5 feet high: This would be granite. Cost of etching an extensions would be Financed by charges for inscriptions. Relocation of the radio pole: The pole will be removed and concreted into place along the walking path. Development of the Crepe Mirtle Garden: This is a donated project of the Paris Council of Garden Clubs. Construction of the Playground: Standard equipment and fencing required with a safety base. Picnic benches and barbecue pits: Standard construction, permanent, durable benches and barbecue pits. Perimeter fencing: Will be required on the South end only. Lighting: Generally should be more than adequate considering the general location of the Park. Flood lights will be employed. Restrooms: Placed in selected areas, possibly near the Pavilion. Durable construction and easy upkeep. Arboretum: Selected trees native to Lamar County will be chosen from nature in the region of city owned land in the Lake Crook area.
