Lamar County Clerk's Office

Office of Lamar County Clerk
Lamar County Courthouse
119 North Main Street
Paris, TX 75460
Phone: 903-737-2420
NOTE: The County Clerk cannot accept out of town checks. They only accept money orders and certified checks if you do not live in the county. BIRTHS: These begin in 1903, however there are some delayed records dating back into the 1800's--very few. Before 1940, the birth records of persons born inside the city limits of Paris, TX were kept by the City of Paris (See
City Clerk's Office for this information.) Birth records for persons born in Lamar County but NOT within in the city of Paris, TX are recorded at the office of Lamar County Clerk. THE BIRTH RECORDS ARE NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR RESEARCH. They are confidential for 75 years (this means only close family can get them for 75 years, then anyone can request them). You must be able to complete an application and send this application to this office along with a fee of $23.00 per request. An application must contain:
  1. The name of the person
  2. Date of birth
  3. Parents names
  4. The reason you are wanting the certificate, including relationship to the person.
DEATHS: The same applies for death records as for birth records; with the exception that the names of the parents of the deceased need not be listed to obtain a death certificate. Death records were not mandatory in the State of Texas until 1940 so there are many that are not recorded. THE DEATH RECORDS ARE NOT OPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR RESEARCHING. Death Certificates are confidential for 25 years (meaning only close family members can get them for 25 years, then anyone can request a copy). An application must be submitted along with the fee of $21.00 for a death certificate containing:
  1. The name of the deceased
  2. Date of death
  3. The reason you are wanting the certificate, including relationship to the person.
MARRIAGES: These begin in 1836 and are available to the public for researching. There are separate indexes listing the last name of the bride as well as a groom index. Copies are $1.00 each and $7.00 for a certfied copy. We must have a date or approximate date to find a marriage license. Click here to search for marriages before 1900. There are many of the original licenses in the genealogical library and these are available without charge as long as you will provide a Family Group Sheet for the couple. The research for these marriage licenses must be done by the researcher.

PROBATE AND WILLS: These begin in 1836 and are available to the public for researching. Copy fees are $1.00 per page whenever the researcher does the research and makes his own copies. If the Clerk's Office does the research and copying, there is a non-refundable research fee of $11.00 per name plus a copy fee of $1.00 per page. A $25.00 copy deposit is needed to begin research if the Clerk's Office does the research.

DEED AND LAND RECORDS: These begin in 1836 and are available to the public for researching. Copy fees are $1.00 per page whenever the researcher does the research and makes his own copies. The Clerk's Office does NOT do the research for these records.
