
CITY SQUARE AND COURTHOUSE Turn of the Century.

CITY AUDITORIUM/NATIONAL GUARD ARMORY
located in Buford Park, it was built in the early 1920"s and demolished in June 1982.
Built as a Memorial to WW 1 veterans, guardsmen met there and it was used as a civic
center ans skating rink. Other uses included boxing and baskedball tournaments, boy and
girl Scout activities, and it was used in the late 50's for Junior High students when
the old school building adjacent to the High School on Connally St. burned. Now this area
is used for girls baseball fields.

OLD CITY HALL
Located at the southwest corner of Main and Davis Streets, it was built in the early 1900's,
it was demolished in November 1967. Downstairs housed the horses nd fire wagon and the city
jail was in the back. Dorm rooms for the firemen were located on the second floor.
After the horses and fire wagon were no longer used, that part of the building was used
for city offices and the fire truck. A new City Hall was built on a lot just behind the
original.

FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH
The original church building located on North Davis Street was built and used from 1871-1884,
then added on to and used further until 1914. At this time the building was torn down
and a newer modern brick building was completed and used from 1914-1963. At this time another
more modern brick building was constructed and is still in use although the name of the church
has changed. The picture is of the building used during 1914-1963.

THE FIRST NATIONAL BANK
Located on the north side of the square, this bank was built in 1886. It was consolidated
with the Sulphur Springs State Bank in 1934. The second floor housed dentist and law offices.
The old building was demolished in October, 1961 for a newer, more modern building, then
remodeled again in the 1970's and again in the late 1980's. The cornerstones of the building
pictured were made of sandstone and each corner was dished out very deeply by gentlemen
sharpening their pocketknives
It is now Alliance Bank.

HALL-FARRAR HOTEL AND DRUG STORE
Located on Church Street just off the square. Its construction date is unknown. The drug
store served lunches and there was a gift and dress shop on the ground floor. Some of the
rooms on the second floor served as offices until the second floor was removed in the 1960's.
It was then known as Graves Drug Store and it had a soda fountain.

SULPHUR SPRINGS CARNEGIE LIBRARY
Located on Oak Avenue next door to the First Baptist Church. The library was built around 1910 at
a cost of $12,565.00 after the Waverly Club had secured funds from Andrew Carnegie. It was
demolished around 1975.

L. J. CAROTHERS RESIDENCE,
is located on Church Street and was built around 1910. It is of Prairie Style in design.
It originally had 4 bedrooms. Several remodels have been done on the inside over the years,
but the outside is basically the same with the same color scheme as in the photo.

BUFORD PARK POOL
Located on the grounds in front of the old City Auditorium, it was built in early 1900's,
possibly by a ladies group in Sulphur Springs and was possibly spring fed. It was a cement
edged pool under the massive oak trees in Buford Park.

W. F. SKILLMAN RESIDENCE
Built about 1889, Prairie Style in design, with 5 original bedrooms, this house is located
on North Davis Street. Mr. Skillman was a banker and always kept the house in pristine
shape, inside and out. It was known as the R. A. Pratt home for many years.
It is now on its fifth owner.

W. R. PATRICK RESIDENCE
Located on College Street and was built in 1911. This house originally had 12 rooms.
The house was passed down through three more generations before it burned in the late 1990's.
