I am the son of Thomas Brothers, who was the son of Martha Maddox Brothers, who was the daughter of Mary Magdeline Reed Maddox, who was daughter of Jacob Gardner Reed. So Jacob is my second great grandfather.

Jacob Gardner Reed was born 27 Dec 1842 in Illinois, and died 27 Jun 1911 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX. He married (1) Mary Jane Popham 18 Jan 1866 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX, daughter of James Popham and Nancy ??. He married (2) Emma Eliza Johnson 06 Feb 1883 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX, daughter of Nathan Johnson and Hester ??.

He was the son of William and Jane Duff Reed. Jacob was the grandson of Gardner and Rebecca Morrow Reed. Gardner Reed was born about 1790, and died 1843 in Lamar Co., TX. Gardner married Rebecca Morrow 26 Feb 1810 in Sumner Co., TN. To tell the story of Jacob one must go back to his grandfather Gardner Reed.

In 1841, Gardner Reed moved his children and grandchildren from Greene County, Illinois to Lamar County, Texas. It is believed he traveled with the Duff and Castelberry families. Upon arriving Gardner Reed, Harmon Reed and Dennis Duff, and John Castleberry all took out 3rd Class Texas Land Certificates around the area of what is now Charleston, Delta County Texas. At the time this region between the north and south Sulphur Rivers was part of Lamar County.

4. Harmon Reed, born Abt. 1820 in TN. He married Rebecca E. Thrasher 13 Jun 1848 in Lamar Co., TX.

5. Elizabeth A. Reed, born 14 Dec 1822 in TN; died 01 Dec 1877 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX. She married William Stephens 15 Jun 1848 in Lamar Co., TX.

6. Matthew G. Reed, born 10 Mar 1825 in TN; died 16 Jan 1889 in Lamar Co., TX. He married Missouri G. Harrell 01 Nov 1848 in Lamar Co., TX.

When Gardner Reed died sometime in 1843 the family mysteriously moved into what is now the Amhearst/Givens communities northeast of Paris, Lamar County, Texas. There his sons, William, Matthew and Harmon, along with their sons began acquiring land from the outskirts of present day Paris to the Pine Creek several miles north and northeast of Paris. Eventually these thousands of acres became known as Reed's Prairie.

William W. Reed (Son of Gardner) was born 03 Oct 1814 in TN, and died 17 Dec 1879 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX. He married Jane Duff 19 Feb 1835 in Jacksonville, Morgan Co., IL. William and his sons did the majority of the land acquisition. Harmon moved to west Texas (and was never heard of again) and Matthew became a well-to-do cotton buyer/merchant.

2. Jacob Gardner Reed, born 27 Dec 1842 in IL; died 27 Jun 1911 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX. He married (1) Mary Jane Popham 18 Jan 1866 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX. He married (2) Emma Eliza Johnson 06 Feb 1883 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX.

3. John G. Reed, born Abt. 1844 in IL; died Bef. 1900 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX. He married Mary Elizabeth Foster 13 Jul 1867 in Lamar Co., TX.

4. Lewis Cass Reed, born Abt. 1847 in Lamar Co., TX. He married S. C. Abt. 1879.

5. William A. Reed, born 16 May 1851 in Lamar Co., TX; died 07 Jul 1857 in Lamar Co., TX.

6. James L. Reed, born Abt. 1853 in Lamar Co., TX. He married Matilda J. Abt. 1876.

William and his sons, Tilford, Jacob, John and Lewis bought, sold and traded many acres of land northeast of Paris for many years. William Reed is known to have owned a few slaves (probably no more than 5-10) and it is conjecture that many of the present day black families named Reed who call Reed's Prairie home, may have come from the former slaves of this William Reed. William was a farmer all his life and Jacob more than the rest of his brothers, took up the plow also. Tilford was more of a townsman and merchant. John was a smaller farmer and Lewis disappeared and has never been heard of.

Jacob apparently got caught up in the war fever and enlisted with many of his neighbors. J. G. Reed, Pvt., no age stated, appears on a Election Return dated 10 Aug 1861, Company for Beat No. 9, Capt. Emsley Harris, Commanding, 9th Brigade, Texas Militia, in Lamar County, State of Texas, copy of which is in the Texas State Library. It states: "A list of names in Military Precinct No. 9 in said County, over 18 and under 45, subject to Military duty and formed into a company Aug the 10th 1861. By the election of the following names as officers of said Company."

The 9th Brigade was only a home guard unit and it was no time before the recruiting officers of regular army units were soon out and about enlisting the locals for their soon-to-be fighting regiments. This quickly dwindled the ranks of the 9th brigade. However, it would be almost another year before Jacob would become a real soldier.

On July 1, 1862, at Fort McCullough in the Indian Territory, Jacob joined the 34th Texas Cavalry. Why he and some of his neighbors would travel several miles north to join a Cavalry unit, when many other units had made enlistments in Lamar County itself, is a mystery to the author. It is important to note that his personal "war fever" must not have been as hot as many others, to have allowed 11 months to go by before he joined up for the fighting. After all, the 9th Texas Infantry had formed and left Lamar County in January of 1862 taking hundreds of neighbors and friends. He even passed up the enlistments in the 9th Texas Cavalry in the fall of 1861 as it marched rode off to Arkansas in November 1861 taking many more Lamar County men. By the time he enlisted in the 34th, both the 9th Infantry and Cavalry had been involved in action in and around the battle of Shiloh area. Nevertheless, Jacob Gardner Reed became a Private in Co. C, 34th Texas Cavalry, and is listed in the book Texas Confederate Soldiers 1861 - 1865 Unit Roster, Vol. II, edited by Janet B. Hewitt, (Wilmington, NC: Broadfoot Publishing Co., 1997), p. 225-229.

Like many of the old Confederates, Jacob never talked of the war to his family. So no tales of battles have been passed down to us. He was wounded in the leg as my grandmother remembered him saying that is why he had a limp to his walk.

His second wife Emma Eliza filed for Confederate pension (#45351) dated 3-25-1929. She stated in the application that he served for 4 years in the CSA Army in the cavalry, unit unknown. There is an attached Affidavit of Witness by F. O. Reed stating "was well acquainted with Jacob Gardner Reed during his life time and remember that he was in the army and served during the war, but do not know in what branch of service he was in. J. P. Majors stated " that J. G. Reed was a member of Capt. Provine's Company: that he had many conversations with him about his service in the army.

On December 4, 1928 the Adjutant General's Office of the War Department in Washington D.C. replied to his son, L. E. Reed, "The name Jacob Gardner Reed has not been found on the muster rolls on file in this office of any organization of the Confederate States Army from the State of Texas."

"The records show, however, one Jacob G. Reed, private Company C, 34th Regiment Texas Cavalry, C.S.A., enlisted July 1, 1862, at Fort McCullough. Muster Roll for January and February, 1864 (latest on file) shows him absent, sick in Lamar County, Texas, since May 2, 1863."

"His name appears on a Regimental Return for the month of April 1865, which shows that he returned April 20, 1865, at Hempstead, Texas; joined from desertion. No later record found. Signed J. H. Bridger, Acting the Adjutant General. By M.G."

As so many of the soldiers did, after having become disgusted with the war, Jacob did not return to his unit. Whether he was physically able to or not is not known. Apparently, as the record shows, he did return long enough to have dodged being labeled a deserter for the rest of his life.

Jacob entered and left the war an unmarried man. On 18 Jan 1866 he married Mary Jane Popham (Lamar County Texas Marriage Records, Vol. 9, p. 175.) She was the daughter of James Popham, a veteran of the 29th Texas Cavalry who died imprisoned at Ft. Smith, AR.

2. Mary Magdeline Reed, born 03 Aug 1873 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX; died 19 Sep 1912 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX. She married Benjamin Stuart Maddox 07 Dec 1892 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX.

Again, almost nothing is known of Jacob and his personal life, except that he was a farmer and raised a little stock here and there living on Reed's Prairie between Powderly and Paris in Lamar County.

Only two stories that have ever been recorded about him as follows. According to Colleen O'Neal, of Dallas, Texas, told to me on 6 Aug 1995, Gard (as Jacob was known) was a good friend of William Herrington. They had served together in the Civil War. One day William rode up to the house and found Mary Jane sewing on some underwear. William made a disrespectful remark about it and angered Gard so much that he shot and killed William over the remark.

In another story, according to the late Martha Jane Maddox Brothers, my grandmother, Gard and Mary Jane were on the road traveling in a wagon in the county and a (first name unknown) Castleberry man shot at them and hit Mary Jane in the foot. Gard reportedly was able to get his gun and killed the Castleberry man. It is not known which Castleberry this was, nor why he shot at the pair. As I have made it my second job in life to record all the burials in Lamar County, there are no Castleberry headstones that would reflect a date of death in this time period.

Both these stories would have had to occur before 1882 as Mary, his first wife died sometime before that year. Who knows, she could have died of the gunshot wound, but my grandmother insisted that she had not.

On 6 Feb 1883, Jacob Gardner Reed married Emma Eliza Johnson Hayes, (Lamar County, Texas Marriage Records, Vol. 9, p. 177.) Their only child was Lewis Elmer Reed, born 24 Nov 1883 in Powderly, Lamar Co., TX; died 02 Jul 1954 in Paris, Lamar Co., TX. Lewis married Vie Anna Frederick 12 Feb 1911 in Lamar Co., TX. It is interesting that Jacob he named his only son the same first name as his brother, Lewis Cass Reed, whom we know absolutely nothing about.

Again, no stories have been handed down of the life of Jacob.

All we know is that Jacob was a farmer. His obituary leaves us just a small clue as to his personal disposition and demeanor.

The Paris Morning News, Thursday, June 29, 1911, p. 1:

Died at Powderly

Gardner Reed, an old resident of Lamar county, who was about seventy years of age, died at 7 o'clock yesterday morning at the home of his son, Prof. Lewis Reed, at Powderly. He had been afflicted with rheumatism for the past two or three years, but had got so that he could go about, when he became afflicted with stomach trouble, which was the cause of his death. The deceased was born in Illinois, but came to Lamar county early in childhood from Illinois with his parents, who settled northeast of Paris on Reed's prairie, from which that locality got its name. The deceased was a gallant soldier in the Confederate Army, in which he enlisted soon after the war began and served until the close. Several years ago he settled on a farm two miles southeast of Powderly and lived there until a short time ago, when he and his wife went to Powderly to live with their son. The deceased was a very original character and was rather quaint in his ways, but was a man of sunny disposition and was held in high esteem by his neighbors. He was living with his second wife at the time of his death. The funeral will be held at 10 o'clock this morning and the burial will take place at the Long graveyard, three miles east of Powderly."

The old soldier is buried in Long Cemetery, Powderly, Lamar Co., TX., in the far left corner of cemetery from main road, buried next to both wives Mary Jane Popham and Emma E. Johnson Hayes. Also in the same row lies his brother John G. Reed. And very near them both are the graves of John Majors and several Castleberry family members. An enigma, if the story of his shooting a Castleberry is indeed true.

Of the two children of Jacob, there are hundreds of descendants now. Only a single handful of them care enough about their family history to even know his name.
