Starksville Cemetery, Lamar County, TX
Starksville Cemetery is located in the southeast quadrant of the county. It is in Block 43 of the Lamar County Road Map produced by American Drafting and Services revised December 1993.
Directions to the cemetery are provided by Richard Dunanc. The cemetery is about 2 miles east of Blossom on F M 194 (the old Blossom to Detroit Road). About 2 miles west of the intersection of FM 194 and FM 410 is a bridge and branch running toward Cuthand Creek. The cemetery is about 100 yards east of this bridge and about 100 yards into the woods on the south side of the road in a stand of trees. Looking east from the low area near the branch, three markers are barely visible. To the east of the cemetery a few feet is a cultivated field and a large lake.
GPS Coordinates are 33° 38' 10.2600'' N, 95° 19' 3.6600'' W. (33.636183333 Latitude and -95.317683333 Longitude)
The area covering the cemetery is quite large, probably about 50 yards square. Because it is within so many trees, graves are covered by leaves and debris and are very difficult to locate. This cemetery is also known as the Garner Cemetery and sometimes the Old Starksville Cemetery. Starksville was an early community in this area before Bennett Station. Bennett Station would later become Detroit. There is also a Garner Cemetery south of Paris near Gadsden and should not be confused with this one.
The oldest inscribed grave in the cemetery is that of Mary E. Starks who died
11 Jul 1858. There are only 8 identifiable graves, and because they are so scattered
over such a large area lends credence that there must be many many more. The
following persons are known to be buried here:
Rebecca H. Walpole Garner 10 Mar 1812 - 14 Jul 1881 - Rebecca Garner was the grandmother of Vice President John Nance Garner.
Charles B. Gullian 12 Dec 1869 - 18 Mar 1870
Louisa R. Gullian 16 May 1844 - 7 Jul 1879
Mary Western Morgan 25 Mar 1875 - 22 Jul 1875
Rose Ella Morgan 24 Jul 1880 - 16 Mar 1881
Samuel Asberry Morgan 22 Nov 1878 - 22 Jul 1879
Watts Scales (birth and death are not known)
Mary E. Starks 11 Aug 1844 - 11 Jul 1858.
