LOCATION: Reed's Prairie Cemetery is a Black cemetery located in the northeast quadrant of the county. It is on County Road 42200 in Block 24 of the Lamar County Road Map produced by American Drafting and Services revised December 1993. It may also be known as Mt. Carmel Cemetery since it is beside the Mt. Carmel Church. DIRECTIONS: Go north on Stillhouse Road from its intersection with Loop 286 about 4 miles. Stillhouse Road turns into County Road 42200 along the way. Cemetery is on the east side of the road beside the Mt. Carmel Church. Please note: Google maps incorrectly labels the church as Prairie Ridge Church which is actually near Sumner. GPS COORDINATES: 33° 43' 41.2032" N, -95° 31' 21.1044" W
OLDEST KNOWN BURIAL: The oldest inscribed grave was that of Baby Furtch who died 9 Dec 1960. NUMBER OF GRAVES: There are 82 known graves. There was evidence of many unmarked graves when the cemetery was recorded in 1993. SIGNS/MARKERS: There are no signs for the cemetery. There is a sign for the Mt. Carmel Church beside the church, not on the road. LAST ENUMERATION: The cemetery was recorded on March 28, 1993, by Ron Brothers. ADD'L INFORMATION: Mt. Carmel Baptist Church occupies the same lot in this country cemetery. Although it is not certain, it is believed the cemetery is on the land once owned by William Reed, an ancestor of Ron Brothers, who came to Lamar County about 1841. The whole area west of Givens and northeast of Paris was once known as Reed's Prairie.
There is a document in County Road Record Book #2 naming what is now called 'Stillhouse Road', and changing it to 'Reed's Prairie Road.'
