From Jeannie Griffin, P.O. Box 1043, Van, TX, 75790: 'My grandmother said that a group of Black families that included 'Aunt Martha Gunn' (as she was called) came from Alabama with John Thomas Sanders, his wife Ada Byron Slaughter Sanders, and their family (some of my ancestors who had land adjoining the Black families property). At one of the Sanders' funerals the Black families 'paid their respects' and they walked to the Sanders' home from that direction. I remember it myself. She even remembered that Aunt Martha's children became teachers and merchants and how well they had done in life.'
This cemetery was surveyed by Ron Brothers and Butch and Betsy Mills on 2 Apr 1995. The oldest inscribed grave in the cemetery is that of John W. Harman, son of Daniel and Mollie Harman, who died 16 Sep 1878.
